Sim swap

A SIM swap scam is when criminals trick your mobile provider into transferring your phone number to a SIM card they control. Once they succeed, they can intercept your calls and text messages often leading to financial theft, identity fraud, and personal data breaches.

Before they can hijack your SIM, scammers gather enough personal info to convince your mobile provider theyโ€™re you.

Common methods include:

๐Ÿ“ค Phishing emails/texts โ€” Fake alerts or login pages to steal your credentials.
๐ŸŒ Data breaches โ€” Stolen customer records from hacked companies.
๐Ÿ“ฑ Social media oversharing โ€” Public posts revealing birthdays, addresses, workplaces, or family members.
๐Ÿ“ž Vishing (voice phishing) โ€” Calling while pretending to be:
โ€ข Your bank, asking to โ€œverifyโ€ account info.
โ€ข Government agencies, claiming urgent action is required.
โ€ข Your mobile provider, either claiming thereโ€™s an account/SIM problem or offering fake โ€œexclusive dealsโ€ or phone upgrades to trick you into giving your account PIN, security answers, or one-time passcodes.
๐Ÿ›’ Dark web purchases โ€” Buying leaked personal data from cybercriminal marketplaces.
๐Ÿ“„ Dumpster diving or theft โ€” Stealing bills, bank statements, or ID documents.

Once they have enough details, scammers:
๐Ÿ’  Impersonate you to your mobile provider.
๐Ÿ’  Claim your phone was lost or stolen.
๐Ÿ’  Request a new SIM card linked to your number.
๐Ÿ’  Activate it, cutting off your original SIM and giving them full control.

With your number, scammers can:
๐Ÿ“ฉ Receive 2FA codes sent via SMS.
๐Ÿ”‘ Reset passwords for banking, email, and social media.
๐Ÿ’ฐ Access accounts and steal money or personal information.

โœ” Limit personal info online โ€” Hide your friends list and avoid oversharing.
โœ” Use strong, unique passwords & app-based MFA โ€” Safer than SMS codes.
โœ” Verify unexpected requests โ€” Call organizations using official contact info.
โœ” Be alert to impersonation โ€” Legit authorities and providers wonโ€™t ask for sensitive details via unsolicited calls.
โœ” Watch for urgency tactics โ€” Pressure to act quickly is a red flag.
